The review of modern data about a functional purpose of membrane contact sites (MCSs) of endoplasmic reticulum is presented. Traffic problems of lipids and calcium in
MCSs are discussed. The sufficient condition for giving MCSs of certain functional is not received till now; the problem of the "anchors" providing contact of two membranes,
definitively is not solved. The question of ability of MCSs to realize free diffusion of any small molecules (presumably to 1.5 kDa) and ions between compartments is discussed.
Key words: endoplasmic reticulum, membrane contact sites, functions
