The review considers the mechanisms of nucleic and mitochondrial control of the life span of unicellular eukaryotes. Special attention is given to analysis of the
mechanisms of functioning of telomerase complex, the mechanisms of varied expression of the genes regulating the cell cycle, and the mitochondrial retrograde
pathway.
Key words: unicellular eukaryotes, intracellular signalling, life span, Sir2, cell stress, ROS, ageing, apoptosis
