The review summarizes current data about transduction mechanism of apoptotic signals by caspase-like enzymes and mitochondrial apoptogenic proteins in unicellular eukaryotes. The role of receptor-dependent and receptor-independent caspase cascades is rewieved. The special attention is given to evolution aspects of problem of apoptosis.

Key words:  unicellular eukaryotes, intracellular signaling, cell stress, ROS, apoptosis, caspases
